Introduction

fastfoodnationcover: Fast Food Nation coverLaunched in 2001, One Book One Bakersfield…One Kern County is a community reading and discussion project which seeks to cultivate a culture of reading and conversation in the diverse communities of Bakersfi eld and Kern County, by bringing residents together around one great book. Reading great literature provokes us to think about ourselves, our environment, and our relationships. Talking about great literature with friends, family and neighbors often adds richness and depth to the experience of reading. Discussing the themes of great books and relating those themes to our own lives locally, can build bridges of understanding between nearby neighbors and far-apart neighborhoods. The idea behind One Book One Bakersfield…One Kern is to have adults, new readers, students and families across Kern County reading the same book at the same time to create a community wide read and conversation.

For its 10th community read One Book One Bakersfield…One Kern has chosen Fast Food Nation and Chew on This (2006 version) by Eric Schlosser.

The Book

Fast Food Nation, written by New York Times best selling author Eric Schlosser, brings to light what has happened with the fast food industry in our nation. While most of us eat some form of fast food on a regular basis, many have not considered what this has done to the health, economy, and general well being of the general public, especially our children. Fast Food Nation examines critical issues from the exploitation of teenagers and minorities, to the marketing of unhealthy diets to our young children, to the dangers of the meat packing business. Every person who reads this book, or the shorter version Chew on This, will think before the next time they choose to drive through for a quick meal.

One Book One Bakersfield...One Kern — a community reading and discussion project — invites everyone to read Fast Food Nation or Chew on This by California author and investigative journalist Eric Schlosser.
